The Cerro El Copey National Park (in Spanish: Parque nacional Cerro El Copey) is a special protected area. It is also known as the Cerro El Copey-Jóvito Villalba National Park. This park is located on Margarita Island in Venezuela. It sits in the highest mountains of Nueva Esparta State.

The park was created in 1974. Its main goal is to protect a unique mountain area. This area has a special ecosystem with many different plants. It is home to many plants and animals found nowhere else. It also holds the only natural water sources on the island.

The park is surrounded by dry, desert-like plains. Even though it is only about 960 meters high, it has green forests. It also has mountain grasslands. These green areas get their moisture from the trade winds. In the lower parts of the park, you will find dry forests. There are also semi-deciduous forests, which lose some leaves in dry seasons. Some villages and farms are located around the park.

Exploring Cerro El Copey National Park

This park is a great place to learn about nature. It shows how different types of environments can exist close together. You can see how mountains create their own climate. This allows green forests to grow in a mostly dry area.

What Makes It Special?

Cerro El Copey is important because it protects unique plants and animals. Many species here are endemic. This means they live only in this specific area. The park also keeps the island's only permanent water safe. This water is vital for all life on Margarita Island.

Plants and Scenery

As you move through the park, you will see different types of plants. The lower areas have dry forests. These trees are adapted to less water. Higher up, the air is cooler and wetter. Here, you will find lush green forests and open grasslands. These areas get moisture from the clouds and winds.
