About Cerro Lípez

Cerro Lípez is a stratovolcano. This means it is a cone-shaped volcano built up by many layers of hardened lava, ash, and rocks. These layers build up over time from many eruptions.

Where is Cerro Lípez?

This impressive mountain is located in the Andes mountain range. Specifically, it is in the Cordillera de Lípez, a part of the Andes. This area is in the Potosí Department of Bolivia, near the border with Chile and Argentina.

A common mix-up

Sometimes, on older maps, Cerro Lípez was wrongly called "Nuevo Mundo." However, Nuevo Mundo is a completely different volcano. It is located hundreds of kilometers to the northeast. Nuevo Mundo is also about 500 meters shorter than Cerro Lípez. The mistake happened because people were confused about the actual height of Nuevo Mundo.
