History of Chahuites
The story of Chahuites began in 1895. The Román Ramírez and Gamboa families were the first to settle here. They built their homes from palm and wood on a high piece of land. This area was surrounded by lots of plants and trees.
Early Settlement and Name Change
The first settlers found many dens of small, mouse-like animals called tuza. Because of this, they decided to name their new home "El Tuzal." Over time, more families arrived, including the Zacarías brothers and Juvencio Fuentes. Life in the region slowly grew and developed.
In 1905, General Porfirio Díaz, who was the president of Mexico, started a big project. He worked on improving the roads and buildings in the region and its official district, Tapanatepec. This project brought many changes to El Tuzal. Many people working on the new buildings decided to stay and live there.
The area continued to grow because the villagers had good harvests. They could grow crops well in both the rainy and dry seasons. Because of the good, wet ground, the name of the region was changed to Chahuites. This name means wet ground.
Becoming an Independent Municipality
As Chahuites continued to develop, the settlers wanted it to become its own independent municipality. Before this, it was part of Tapanatepec. After much effort, Chahuites finally became independent in 1948.
