Chalatenango (pronounced 'cha-la-te-NANG-go') is a cool town and district in El Salvador. People who live there often call it 'Chalate' (pronounced 'cha-LAH-te'). It's the main city, or capital, of the Chalatenango department. Since May 1, 2021, the mayor of Chalatenango is Alfredo Hernández.

About Chalatenango
Chalatenango has its own special symbols, like a coat of arms and a flag. These symbols are the same ones used for the whole Chalatenango department.
In 2007, the town and its surrounding areas covered about 131.5 square kilometers (that's about 50.8 square miles). At that time, about 29,271 people lived there. The area is split into 6 main parts called cantons and 36 smaller villages called caserios.

Sports are a big deal in Chalatenango! The town is home to two professional football (soccer) teams: Alacranes Del Norte and A.D. Chalatenango.
Football Teams
Both teams play their home games at the Estadio José Gregorio Martínez. This stadium has bright floodlights for night games and a main stand with seats for fans.
Jaripeo (Ranching Events)
Another popular sport in the area is jaripeo, which is like a rodeo or ranching event. These exciting events happen every few months. You can find them in the villages around Chalatenango. Sometimes, they also take place in the big field across from the Gregorio Martínez stadium, just outside the city.
