The Chamber of Deputies (which in Spanish is called Cámara de Diputados) is an important part of the government in Bolivia. It is like the "lower house" of Bolivia's main law-making group, the Plurinational Legislative Assembly. The rules for how it works and what it can do are written in Bolivia's Political Constitution.

What is the Chamber of Deputies?

The Chamber of Deputies is where elected representatives from all over Bolivia meet. Their main job is to create and approve new laws for the country. They also check on how the government is doing its job.

How Many Members Are There?

The Chamber of Deputies has 130 members, called deputies. These deputies are chosen in a special way called the "additional member system." This system helps make sure different parts of the country and different groups of people are represented.

How Deputies Are Elected

  • 70 deputies are elected from specific areas, like neighborhoods or towns. These are called "electoral districts."
    • Out of these 70, 7 seats are set aside for people from Indigenous or Campesino (farmer) groups. These representatives are chosen using their traditional customs and ways, known as usos y costumbres.
  • 60 deputies are chosen based on how many votes political parties get across different regions. This is called "proportional representation." It means if a party gets a certain percentage of votes, they get a similar percentage of these seats.

Who Can Be a Deputy?

To become a deputy, a person must be at least 25 years old on the day of the election. Once elected, deputies serve for five years.

History of the Chamber

The Chamber of Deputies was first started in 1831. This makes it a very old and important part of Bolivia's government history. Over the years, it has helped shape many laws and decisions for the country.
