The Chandler Store is a very old and special building in Belgrade, Maine. It was built way back in 1838. What makes it unique is that it's one of only two buildings in Maine made from large granite blocks that used to be a store. Today, it is a private home. This historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 because of its importance.
What is the Chandler Store?
The old Chandler Store building is located on the west side of Route 27. It sits on land that looks out over Long Lake. This building has two and a half stories. It is built from large, smooth granite blocks. The roof slopes down on two sides, like a typical house.
How Does It Look?
The front of the building has three sections. The main door is in the middle. Above the door, you can see "BUILT J. CHANDLER 1838" carved into a stone beam called a lintel. The windows are simple and rectangular. On the left side of the building, there is a two-story wooden porch. It has a flat roof and square posts holding it up.
The Story Behind the Building
The Chandler Store was built in 1838 for a man named J. Chandler. Two skilled masons from Ireland helped build it. They got the large granite stones from a place called Vienna, which is nearby.
Moving these heavy stones was a big job! The workers had to pull them by sled across Long Pond. They could only do this in the winter when the pond was completely frozen solid.
Over the years, the building changed. In 1922, a man named Charles R. Brown added more windows. Then, in 1927, he added the porches. This was part of turning the old store into a home.
