The Changalikodan Nendran Banana, often just called Changalikodan, is a very special type of banana. It comes from a village called Chengazhikodu in the Thrissur District of Kerala state in India. This banana is famous for its unique taste and bright yellow color.

Today, Changalikodan bananas are mostly grown along the banks of the Bharathapuzha river. You can find farms growing them in places like Erumapetty, Wadakkancherry, Mundoor, Kaiparambu, Desamangalam, and Thayyur, all within the Thrissur District.

This banana is also very important for a special tradition. It is known as the Kaazhchakula, which means a special offering, for the main god at the Guruvayur Temple, the Sree Krishna Temple. Each bunch of Changalikodan bananas usually has about 20 to 25 fruits.

Changalikodan bananas have a special label called a Geographical indication (GI) registration. This means they are officially recognized as coming from a specific place and having qualities linked to that place. It's like a special badge that says, "I'm from here, and I'm unique!" The Chengalikodan Banana Growers’ Association in Erumapetty received this important registration.

How Changalikodan Bananas Are Grown

Changalikodan bananas are usually planted in October. They are grown using natural farming methods, which helps them get their special yellow color and texture. Farmers pay close attention to each plant. They make sure the bananas get special care at every stage of their growth.

To help the bananas grow strong and healthy, farmers use natural fertilizers. These include green leaf manure, ash, and cow dung. These natural ingredients help the plants get all the nutrients they need.

Traditional farmers have a special trick to help the bananas get their perfect color. They cover the growing banana bunches with old banana leaves. This helps the fruit ripen evenly and develop its beautiful yellow shade.
