The Changalikodan Nendran Banana, often just called Changalikodan, is a very special type of banana. It first grew and is still mostly farmed in a village called Chengazhikodu, located in the Thrissur District of Kerala state in India. These bananas are now also grown along the banks of the Bharathapuzha river. You can find them growing in places like Erumapetty, Wadakkancherry, Mundoor, Kaiparambu, Desamangalam, and Thayyur, all within the Thrissur District.

Changalikodan bananas are known as Kaazhchakula. This means they are a special offering to the main god at the Guruvayur Temple, which is the Sree Krishna Temple. Each bunch of these bananas usually has about 20 to 25 fruits. The Changalikodan banana has a special "Geographical Indication" (GI) registration. This is like a unique label that shows the banana comes from a specific place and has special qualities because of that origin. The Chengalikodan Banana Growers’ Association in Erumapetty received this important registration.

How Changalikodan Bananas Are Grown

Changalikodan bananas are usually planted in October. They are grown using organic methods, which means farmers use natural fertilizers instead of chemical ones. This special way of farming helps give the bananas their unique yellow color and texture. Using too many organic fertilizers can sometimes change how the banana bunches look.

Farmers give these bananas a lot of individual attention and special care. They watch every stage of growth closely. To help the bananas grow, farmers use natural things like green leaf manure, ash, and cow dung. Traditional farmers even cover the banana bunches with old banana leaves. This helps the bananas get their beautiful, bright color as they ripen.
