Thrissur (also called Trichur or Trissur) is a district in the central part of Kerala, a state in India. It covers an area of about 3,032 square kilometers (about 1,171 square miles). More than 10% of Kerala's people live in Thrissur district.

Thrissur is often called the "cultural capital of Kerala." It is famous for its many ancient temples, churches, and mosques. The district is also well-known for its colorful festivals, especially the Thrissur Pooram, which is a very spectacular temple festival. The Thrissur district was officially created on July 1, 1949.

In 2011, a count of the population showed that Thrissur district had 3,110,327 people. This number is similar to the population of the country of Mongolia. Thrissur is the 113th most populated district out of 640 districts in India.

About 1,026 people live in each square kilometer of Thrissur. Between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by about 4.58%. For every 1,000 males, there were 1,109 females, which is called the sex ratio. Most people in Thrissur can read and write, with a literacy rate of 95.32%. Thrissur was also the second most city-like district in Kerala, after Ernakulam district.

In 2001, the population was 2,975,440. At that time, 86% of people could read and write. This was higher than the average for all of India. About 10% of the people were younger than 6 years old.

Most people in Thrissur belong to three main religious groups: Hindus, Christians, and Muslims. Hindus make up the largest group, followed by Christians and then Muslims.
