Ernakulam is a cool district in Kerala, India. It's located in the central part of the state. It covers about 3,068 square kilometers. More than 12% of Kerala's people live here. Its main office is in Kakkanad, which is a part of Kochi city.

People call Ernakulam the business heart of Kerala. The district is famous for its old temples, churches, and mosques. The biggest city area in Kerala, called Greater Cochin, is in this district. Ernakulam makes the most money for the state. It's the third most populated district in Kerala. Only Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram have more people. Lots of tourists, both from India and other countries, visit Ernakulam.

The main language spoken here is Malayalam. This is the native language of Kerala. English is also used a lot, especially in business. In 2012, Ernakulam became the first district in India where everyone had access to banking services. This is called 'meaningful financial inclusion'.

Ernakulam district has been important in the history of south India for a long time. Many groups like the Jews, Syrians, Arabs, Chinese, Dutch, British, and Portuguese came here by sea. They all left their mark on the town. In 1896, the Maharaja of Cochin started local government. He created a town council in Ernakulam. The district's main office was first in Ernakulam, which gave the district its name. Later, the office moved to Kakkanad.

People and Culture

According to the 2011 census, Ernakulam district has about 3,282,388 people. This is similar to the country of Mauritania or the US state of Iowa. This makes it the 104th most populated district in India. The district has about 1069 people per square kilometer. Between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by 5.6%.

Ernakulam has 1028 females for every 1000 males. Its literacy rate is very high at 95.68%. This district is known as the "most advanced" district in Kerala. In 2001, it had 3,105,798 residents. About 68% of the people live in cities.

The largest religious group is Hindus, making up about 46.53% of the population. Christians are the second largest group, with 38.78%. This includes Syrians and Latins. Muslims make up 14.55% of the population. There are also small groups of Jains, Jews, and Sikhs living in Kochi. Ernakulam district has the most Christian people in India.

Important religious groups in the district include Ezhavas and Nairs. Christian groups like Jacobites, Syrian Catholics, and Latin Christians are also significant. The Malankara Orthodox Church is another Christian community. Most Muslims here are Sunni Shafi'i.

Besides these major groups, there are also Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs, and Jews. The ancestors of the Jews came from Jerusalem in 70 A.D. to India. Today, very few Jewish families live in Cochin. Most of them became Syrian Christians (Nasranis). The rest moved to Israel in the 20th century.
