Idukki is a district in the state of Kerala, India. It was created on January 26, 1972. At first, its main office was in Kottayam. Later, in 1976, it moved to Painavu. Idukki is located in the Western Ghats, a mountain range in Kerala.

It's the second largest district by size in Kerala. However, it has the fewest people living in each square kilometer. More than half of Idukki is covered by forests. While cities and towns are busy, villages are much quieter. Idukki is also known as the "spice garden of Kerala" because many spices grow there.

People and Population

According to a survey in 2011, about 1.1 million people live in Idukki district. This makes it the 416th most populated district out of 640 in India. About 254 people live in every square kilometer.

Between 2001 and 2011, the number of people living in Idukki actually went down a little. For every 1000 boys and men, there are 1006 girls and women. Most people in Idukki can read and write, with a literacy rate of 92.2 percent. The main religions in the district are Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam.

While many native plants and animals have been affected by these plantations, some species still live in protected areas nearby. These include places like the Kurinjimala Sanctuary and the Eravikulam National Park.
