History of Coimbatore District

Coimbatore district was once part of a historical region called Kongu Nadu. Long ago, the Chera kings ruled this area. Coimbatore was an important stop on an ancient trade route. This route connected the Roman Empire to places like Muziris and Arikamedu.

Around the 10th century, the Chola dynasty took control. Later, in the 15th century, the Vijayanagara Empire ruled the region. The Madurai Nayaks then introduced a system called Palayakkars. This divided the area into 24 smaller parts.

After some time, the region became part of the Kingdom of Mysore. When Tipu Sultan was defeated in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, the British took over. The area then joined the Madras Presidency.

Coimbatore played a big role in the Second Polygar War. This was when Dheeran Chinnamalai led a rebellion against the British. The city of Coimbatore became the capital of the newly formed district. In the past, this district was much larger. It included parts of today's Tiruppur, Erode, Karur, and Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu. It also included parts of Palakkad in Kerala and Chamarajanagar in Karnataka.
