Erode district is a cool place in the western part of Tamil Nadu, an Indian state. It used to be called Periyar district. The main city in Erode district is Erode. This district was once part of Coimbatore District. It became its own district on September 17, 1979. Later, in 1996, its name changed to Erode District. In 2011, about 2.25 million people lived here. There were 993 girls for every 1,000 boys, which is a good number compared to the rest of the country.

Bhavani River: A Lifeline

The Bhavani River starts in the Western Ghats mountains. It begins in Silent Valley National Park in Kerala. This river gets water from other streams. One of them is the Siruvani River. People say the Siruvani River has the second tastiest water in the world. The Kundah river also joins the Bhavani. Then, the Bhavani River flows into Erode District near Sathyamangalam.

Economy: What Erode Makes

Farming is the most important way people earn money in Erode district. Many different crops grow here. These include paddy (rice), plantains (a type of banana), silk, cotton, turmeric, coconuts, and sugarcane.

Turmeric City

Erode district grows a lot of turmeric. It produces 43% of all the turmeric in Tamil Nadu. Because of this, Erode city is often called the Turmeric City. It's a big market where turmeric is bought and sold.

Other Important Products

Erode district is also a top producer of plantains and coconuts in Tamil Nadu. It's also a leader in making white silk. The country's first automated silk reeling unit is located near Gobichettipalayam. This means machines help make silk threads faster.

In 2005, a special type of bedsheet from Bhavani was recognized. It's called Bhavani Jamakkalam. The Government of India registered it as a Geographical Indication. This means it's a unique product from that specific area.
