River's Journey and Importance
The Bhavani River is about 217-kilometre (135 mi) long. It is a "perennial" river, which means it flows all year round and never dries up.
The river collects water from a large area, covering parts of Tamil Nadu (87%), Kerala (9%), and Karnataka (4%). The Bhavani River is very important for farming. About 90% of its water is used to water crops, which is called irrigation. This helps farmers grow food for many people.
Dams on the Bhavani River
There are two main dams built on the Bhavani River:
Bhavanisagar Dam
The Bhavanisagar dam is located on the Bhavani River in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu. This dam is special because it is one of the largest "earthen dams" in the world. An earthen dam is built mostly from soil, sand, and rock.
The Bhavanisagar Dam is about 8 km (5.0 mi) long and 40 m (130 ft) high. It can hold a lot of water, which is then used for irrigation and other purposes.
Kodiveri Dam
Another dam on the Bhavani River is the Kodiveri dam. It is located near a place called Gobichettipalayam in Western Tamil Nadu. This dam also helps to control the river's water and provide it for farming.
