Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Malappuram district is a special area, or district, located in the state of Kerala in India. Its main town and administrative center is Malappuram.

This district was created on June 16, 1969. It was formed by combining parts of two older districts: Kozhikode and Palakkad. In the early 1900s, the area faced some challenges, including a period of slow growth. Later, new government policies helped change how land was owned.

In the 1970s, many people from Malappuram traveled to countries in the Persian Gulf to work in the oil industry. They sent money back home, which helped the local economy grow a lot. Because of this, by the end of the 20th century, Malappuram had very good healthcare and almost everyone could read and write.
