Chapel, Howell County, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Chapel is a small, quiet place in the northeastern part of Howell County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

You can find Chapel on county road 2680, just east of Missouri Route W. It's about four miles (or six kilometers) south-southeast of a bigger town called Mountain View. Two important landmarks in the area are the Chapel Hill Church and an old historic school, both located just west of Route W.

A Look Back: Chapel's History

Chapel has a short but interesting history. A long time ago, in 1860, a post office was opened here. Having a post office was a big deal for a community back then, as it meant people could send and receive mail easily, connecting them to the outside world. This post office served the community for many years, finally closing its doors in 1883.

The community of Chapel got its name from the nearby Chapel Hill Church. Churches were often central to early American communities, serving as gathering places and helping to define the area.
