Chapin is a small, unincorporated community located in Howell County, Missouri, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.
Chapin is situated along the north bank of Howell Creek. It's also near the old St. Louis–San Francisco Railway line. This community is about four miles (or six kilometers) southeast of a larger town called West Plains.
Chapin's Past
Chapin had its own post office, which is a place where people send and receive mail. This post office opened in 1888. It served the community for many years before it closed down in 1920.
The community of Chapin was named after a person named Hugh Chapin. He was a local judge, which means he was a public official who heard and decided cases in a court of law.
