Who Were the Charca People?
The Charca people were an indigenous group. They lived in the area that is now the Chuquisaca Department in Bolivia. Before the 15th century, they were part of the large Inca Empire. The Inca Empire was a powerful civilization in South America.
Facing Challenges
The Charca people often faced challenges from other groups. They were sometimes invaded by people called the ava guarani. These groups also spoke an Aymaran language. The Charcas also had to deal with attacks from the Chiriguanos. These invasions happened before the Europeans arrived.
First European Contact
A Portuguese explorer named Aleixo Garcia is thought to be the first European to meet the Charca people. This happened in the year 1525. He was a "conquistador," which means a conqueror or explorer from Europe.
Founding of Sucre
Later, in 1538, a new city was founded on the land of the Charcas. This city is known today as Sucre. It is an important city in Bolivia.
