Charlayne Woodard's Acting Journey

Charlayne Woodard started her acting career in 1976. Her first professional role was in a traveling play called Don't Bother Me I Can't Cope. This play was special because it was directed by Vinette Carroll, the first Black woman to direct a show on Broadway.

Early Broadway and Film Roles

In 1977, Woodard made her big debut on Broadway in a new version of the musical Hair. She also had a supporting role in the movie version of Hair. That same year, she starred as Cindy in the TV movie Cindy and even performed on The Tonight Show.

In 1978, she was part of the original cast of the popular musical Ain't Misbehavin'. For this role, she was nominated for both a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She performed this role in London, Los Angeles, and later in a Broadway revival with the original cast. The musical was even filmed and shown on NBC, and an album of the original cast was released.
