Venus magazine focused on stories and interests of African-American people. It was known for being new and different in its articles.

Many important writers and people were featured in Venus. Some of these included Cheryl Dunye, Jewelle Gomez, James Earl Hardy, Shirlene Holmes, Patrik-Ian Polk, and Shay Youngblood.

In 2006, Charlene Cothran changed the focus of Venus magazine. This change led to less money from advertisements. Because of this, Venus magazine stopped being published in 2007.

Charlene Cothran also published another magazine called Kitchen Table News.
