The Charles A. Miller House is a historic home in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. It was built in 1890. The famous architect Samuel Hannaford designed it.
This house is two and a half stories tall. It was built in the Gothic Revival style. The house is made of brick and limestone. It has a slate roof. The front of the house has special stone patterns. These are called ashlar courses. It also has decorative walls at the top, like a castle, called battlements. A large covered entrance, known as a portico, stands at the front door.
The house has a rectangular shape. It is two sections wide and four sections deep. One side of the building has a pointed roof, called a gable. The castle-like battlements are mostly on the left side. The building's structure uses a post and lintel system. This means vertical posts support horizontal beams. The stone layers on the outside also form these horizontal beams.
Meet Charles Miller
Charles Miller was born in Portageville, New York in 1842. He moved to Cincinnati after serving in the Union Army. In 1866, he started his own business. He became an undertaker, helping families with funerals.
By the late 1800s, Charles Miller was very successful. He built this beautiful house in 1890. He continued his business into the 1900s. In 1904, a city book called him Cincinnati's oldest living funeral director.
The Architect: Samuel Hannaford
Charles Miller chose a very respected architect for his house. He picked the firm of Samuel Hannaford. Samuel Hannaford was born in England. He started his architecture business in Cincinnati in the late 1850s.
By the end of the 1800s, Hannaford was very well-known. He designed many buildings for important people in the city. People liked his work because he paid close attention to details. He also designed buildings in many different styles.
Four other houses designed by Hannaford are still standing today. They were built between 1890 and 1892. Like the Miller house, they all have the special ashlar stone patterns. Many of Hannaford's early 1890s houses have a mix of styles. The Miller House is one of these. It shows an interesting mix of Victorian styles.
A Historic Home
In 1980, the Charles A. Miller House became a recognized historic place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It earned this honor because its historic architecture was so well-preserved.
About 40 other properties in Cincinnati were added at the same time. These included 14 other houses. All these buildings were designed by Samuel Hannaford or his sons. The Miller House is newer than some of these. The oldest Hannaford house in the city was built in 1862.
