Charles Bage facts for kids
Charles Woolley Bage (1751–1822) was an English architect. He was born into a Quaker family in Derby, England. Bage is famous for designing the world's first building with an iron frame. This building was the Ditherington Flax Mill in Shrewsbury, built between 1796 and 1797. He also designed the third and eighth steel-framed buildings ever made.

Early Life and Interests
Charles Woolley Bage's family moved to Elford, Staffordshire, soon after he was born. His father started a paper mill there. Later, his father also became a partner in a company that worked with iron.
Throughout his life, Bage was very interested in new technologies. He explored how iron could be used in building construction. He also looked into using gas for lighting buildings.
Work and Community Role
By 1776, Bage was working as a wine merchant in Shrewsbury. He was also a surveyor, which means he measured land and helped plan building projects. His skills as a surveyor were useful to people who wanted to build mills in the town.
Bage was also involved in the local government of Shrewsbury. From 1784 to 1787, he was in charge of the local workhouse. Later, in 1807, he became the Mayor of Shrewsbury.
A Pioneer of Modern Buildings
The building methods Charles Woolley Bage developed were very important. His use of iron frames was a big step forward in construction. This technology helped pave the way for modern skyscrapers. He truly was a pioneer in building design.
A road in Shrewsbury, "Bage Way," was named after him. It connects Old Potts Way to Crowmere Road.
