Charles Bennet, 2nd Earl of Tankerville (born December 21, 1697 – died March 14, 1753) was an important British noble and politician. He held the special title of Knight of the Thistle. Before he became an Earl, he was known as Lord Ossulston from 1714 to 1722.

His Early Life and Family
Charles Bennet was the son of Charles Bennet, 1st Earl of Tankerville. His mother was Lady Mary. She was the daughter of another important noble, Ford Grey, 1st Earl of Tankerville.
When his father became an Earl in 1714, Charles received a special name called a courtesy title. This title was Lord Ossulston. It showed that he was the son of an Earl.
His Political Career
Becoming an Earl and a Knight
In 1722, Charles Bennet's father passed away. Charles then became the 2nd Earl of Tankerville. This meant he inherited his father's noble title and responsibilities.
In 1730, he was given a very special honor. He became a Knight of the Thistle. This is a high award given by the King or Queen of Scotland.
Important Government Roles
From 1733 to 1737, Lord Tankerville worked for the government. He served as the Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. This was a role in the royal household. He worked under Sir Robert Walpole, who was like the Prime Minister at the time.
Lord Tankerville also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland. He held this important position from 1740 until his death in 1753. A Lord Lieutenant was the King's personal representative in a county. They were responsible for keeping order and organizing the local militia.

Around 1715, Charles Bennet married Camilla Colville. She also had an important role in the royal court. Camilla served as a Lady of the Bedchamber. This meant she was a close attendant to Queen Caroline. Later, she served Princess Augusta.
Lord Tankerville passed away in March 1753. He was 56 years old. His oldest son, also named Charles, became the 3rd Earl of Tankerville.
