Charles Boscawen (born 1627, died 1689) was an important English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is a part of the English Parliament. He served there at different times between 1654 and 1689.

Early Life and Family

Charles Boscawen was born in 1627 and was baptised on October 28 of that year. His family was from Tregothnan in Cornwall, England. His father was Hugh Boscawen, and his mother was Margaret Rolle.

Charles came from a very old and well-known family in Cornwall. His father, Hugh Boscawen, made a lot of money from copper mines. These mines were located in places like Chacewater and Gwennap. His father owned much of the land there.

The Rich Mines of Cornwall

The Chacewater mine, also known as Wheal Busy, was once called "the richest square mile on Earth." This mine produced a huge amount of copper ore, over 100,000 tons! It also produced 27,000 tons of arsenic.

Charles had two brothers who were also important politicians:

  • Hugh Boscawen (1625–1701)
  • Edward Boscawen (1628–1685)

Both of his brothers also served as Members of Parliament (MPs) for areas in Cornwall.

Education and Training

In 1646, Charles Boscawen began training to become a lawyer. He studied at the Inner Temple, which is one of the famous schools for lawyers in London.

Political Career

Charles Boscawen had a long career in politics. He was elected to the English Parliament several times.

Besides being an MP, Charles Boscawen held other important roles:

  • He was a commissioner for assessment in Cornwall in 1652 and 1657. This meant he helped decide how much tax people should pay.
  • In 1660, he became a Justice of the Peace (J.P.). A J.P. is a local official who helps keep law and order.
  • He was also a captain in the local militia, which was like a local army.

In 1689, Charles Boscawen was elected MP for Tregoney. He served in this role until he passed away a few months later at the age of 62.
