Charles Boyle, who was the 2nd Earl of Burlington, was an important person in England and Ireland. He was a nobleman, worked for the royal court, and was also a politician. He passed away on February 9, 1704.
Charles Boyle's Early Life
Charles Boyle was the oldest son of Charles Boyle, 3rd Viscount Dungarvan. His mother was Lady Jane Seymour.
His Career and Titles
In 1690, Charles Boyle became a Member of Parliament for a place called Appleby. The next year, he also became the Governor of County Cork in Ireland.
In 1694, he gave up his seat in Parliament. This was because he inherited important family titles from his father. These titles included Viscount Dungarvan, Baron Clifford, and Baron Clifford of Lanesborough.
A year later, in 1695, he joined the Privy Council of Ireland. This was a group of important advisors to the King or Queen in Ireland. He was also made the Lord High Treasurer of Ireland, which meant he was in charge of the country's money.
In 1698, he inherited even more titles from his grandfather. He became the Earl of Burlington and the Earl of Cork. In the same year, he was appointed a Lord of the Bedchamber. This was a special role where he served the King directly.
In 1699, he was given another important job: Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding of Yorkshire. This meant he was the King's representative in that area of England. Finally, in 1702, he joined the Privy Council of England, becoming an advisor to the King or Queen in England too.
Charles Boyle died in 1704. After his death, his oldest son, Richard, inherited all his titles.
Family and Later Life
On January 26, 1688, Charles Boyle married Juliana Noel at Ely House. Juliana was born in 1672 and passed away in 1750. She was the only daughter of Henry Noel.
Charles and Juliana had five children who lived to adulthood:
- Lady Elizabeth Boyle (1690–1751), who married Sir Henry Bedingfeld, 3rd Baronet.
- Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington (1694–1753), who inherited his father's titles.
- Lady Juliana Boyle (around 1697–1739), who married Charles Bruce, 3rd Earl of Ailesbury.
- Lady Jane Boyle (1699–1780), who never married.
- Lady Henrietta Boyle (1701–1746), who married her distant cousin, Henry Boyle, 1st Earl of Shannon, in 1726.
The 2nd Earl of Burlington passed away on February 9, 1704. After his death, his wife, Juliana, became known as the Dowager Countess. She continued to serve at the royal court of Queen Anne as a Lady of the Bedchamber.
