Charles Boyle, Viscount Dungarvan, was an important English nobleman and politician. He was born on December 12, 1639, and passed away on October 12, 1694. He belonged to a well-known family from England and Ireland.
Growing Up
Charles Boyle was the son of Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Burlington, and his mother was Lady Elizabeth Clifford. From the moment he was born, he was known by the special name Viscount Dungarvan. This was a "courtesy title," which means it was a title used out of politeness because of his father's important position.
His Life and Work
Charles Boyle became a member of the Royal Society in 1664. This was a group for important scientists and thinkers in England.
From 1670 to 1679, Charles was a Member of Parliament for a place called Tamworth. This meant he was chosen to represent people in the British House of Commons, which is part of the government. After that, he represented Yorkshire from 1679 onwards.
In 1682, Charles bought a large house called Chiswick House. It was a beautiful old house that his family used as a summer home. They would go there to relax away from their main house in London, called Burlington House.
Later, in 1689, he also became a member of the British House of Lords. This is another important part of the British government, usually for noble families. When his mother passed away in 1691, Charles inherited another title, becoming the Baron Clifford.
Charles Boyle died in 1694, before his own father. Because of this, his titles went to his oldest son, also named Charles Boyle. This younger Charles then became the 2nd Earl of Burlington after his grandfather.
