Charles William Bury, 1st Earl of Charleville (born June 30, 1764 – died October 31, 1835) was an important Irish landowner, a historian who studied old things (an antiquarian), and a politician. He was known by different titles during his life, including Lord Tullamore and Viscount Charleville, before becoming the Earl of Charleville. He was also a member of important groups like the Royal Society.

Charles William Bury was born into an important family in Ireland. His father, John Bury, inherited large estates, but sadly passed away soon after Charles was born. Charles's mother, Catherine Sadleir, later remarried.

Early Life and Education

Charles William Bury went to Trinity College, Dublin, which is a famous university in Ireland. This education prepared him for a life in public service and politics.

A Career in Politics

Charles William Bury began his political journey in the Irish Parliament. He first represented the area of Kilmallock in 1790. He held this seat again from 1792 until 1797.

In 1797, he was given the title Baron Tullamore. This was a special honour, making him a member of the Irish nobility, known as the Peerage of Ireland. He also helped to calm things down during the Irish Rebellion of 1798.

Two years later, in 1800, he received another title: Viscount Charleville. In 1801, he became an Irish Representative Peer. This meant he was chosen to represent Irish nobles in the British Parliament. In 1806, he received his highest title, becoming the Earl of Charleville. This brought back a title that had belonged to his family before.

Important Roles and Interests

Beyond politics, Charles William Bury had a keen interest in history and learning. In 1803, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for scientists. In 1814, he also became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. This group focuses on studying ancient times and historical objects.

He also served as the President of the Royal Irish Academy from 1812 to 1822. This academy is a leading group for promoting learning and research in Ireland.

Building Castles and Towns

Lord Charleville married Catherine Maria Dawson in 1798. He was known for his building projects. He rebuilt Charleville Castle in a grand, old-fashioned style called Gothic architecture. He also played a big role in developing the town of Tullamore, where he owned much of the land.

Charles William Bury passed away in October 1835, at the age of 71. His son, Charles, took over his titles and estates.
