Early Life of Charles Cholmondeley

Charles Cholmondeley was born in 1685. His father was Thomas Cholmondeley, who owned the large Vale Royal estate. Charles became the owner of these estates in 1702 after his father passed away.

He went to St. John’s College, Cambridge in 1701. Later, in 1709, he also studied law at Middle Temple. In 1714, Charles married Essex Pitt. Her father, Thomas Pitt, was a governor.

Charles Cholmondeley's Political Career

Charles Cholmondeley started his political journey in 1710. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Cheshire. An MP is someone chosen to represent a group of people in the government.

He was part of the October Club, a group of Tory politicians. They wanted to have more say in how the country was run. By 1712, he joined another group called the March Club.

In 1713, he was re-elected without anyone running against him. However, in the 1715 election, he lost. Some of his supporters in Cheshire did not vote for him.

After a few years, Charles Cholmondeley was elected again as an MP for Cheshire in 1722. He won another election in 1727. In Parliament, he often voted against the government's plans. For example, in 1734, he spoke against a law called the Septennial Act.

He was re-elected in 1734. After that, he was elected without opposition in 1741, 1747, and 1754. He continued to vote against the government's ideas regularly.

Later Life and Legacy

Charles Cholmondeley passed away on March 30, 1756. He had three sons and five daughters. Two of his sons died before him. His son, Thomas Cholmondeley, took over his estates and his seat in Parliament.
