Becoming Baron Cornwallis

Charles Cornwallis was the son of Charles Cornwallis, 3rd Baron Cornwallis, and Elizabeth Fox. When his father passed away on 29 April 1693, Charles became the 4th Baron Cornwallis. This meant he inherited his father's title and position.

His Political Journey

He also held other important roles:

  • From 1698 to 1703, he was the Lord-Lieutenant of Suffolk. This job meant he was the King's representative in the county of Suffolk, helping to keep order and manage local affairs.
  • Between 1715 and 1721, he was one of the Joint Postmasters-General. This role was in charge of the postal service for the entire country.
  • In the last two years of his life, from 1721 until his death in January 1722, he was the Paymaster of the Forces. This was a very important job in the government's cabinet, where he managed the money for the army.

His Family

Charles Cornwallis married Lady Charlotte Butler on 6 June 1699. Together, they had ten children:

  • Charles
  • Stephen
  • Charlotte
  • John
  • Richard
