Charles Dickson Archibald (born October 31, 1802 – died September 12, 1868) was an important person in Nova Scotia. He was a lawyer and a businessman. He also served as a politician, representing the area of Truro Township in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1826 to 1830.

Early Life and Education

Charles Dickson Archibald was born in Truro, Nova Scotia. His parents were Samuel George William Archibald and Elizabeth Dickson. Charles went to school at Pictou Academy, which was a well-known school at the time. After his schooling, he decided to follow in his father's footsteps and studied law. He learned about law by working in his father's office.

A Career in Law and Public Service

In 1830, Charles Archibald took on a big job. He became the chief clerk and registrar for the Supreme Court of Newfoundland. This meant he helped manage important court documents and records. He worked in this role for about a year. In 1831, he left the position, and his brother, Edward Mortimer Archibald, took over the job.

Life in England

In 1832, Charles Archibald got married to Bridget Walker. She was from a wealthy family in England and owned a large estate called Rusland Hall in Lancashire. After their marriage, Charles and Bridget moved to England. Charles spent most of the rest of his life living there.

Even though he lived in England, Charles still cared about Nova Scotia. He helped raise money for a special project. This project was to build an iron mine near Londonderry, Nova Scotia. An iron mine digs up iron, which is used to make many things. A company called the Arcadian Charcoal Iron Co was started for this mine.

In 1840, Charles Archibald was given a special honor. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. This is a very old and respected group of scientists and thinkers. Being a Fellow means you are recognized for important contributions to knowledge.

Charles also showed interest in big projects that would help Canada. In 1851, he went to a meeting in Toronto. This meeting was about building a railway. The railway would connect the areas of Nova Scotia and other parts of Canada.

Charles Dickson Archibald passed away in London, England, in 1868.
