Charles Dodgson was an important English church leader. He lived from about 1722 to 1795. He worked as a bishop in the Church of Ireland. First, he was the Bishop of Ossory. Later, he became the Bishop of Elphin. He was also a member of the Royal Society.

Early Life and Education

Charles Dodgson was born in a place called Howden, in Yorkshire, England. We don't know his exact birthday. But he was baptised on January 10, 1722. His father, Christopher Dodgson, was also a church leader in Howden.

Charles went to two famous schools. He studied at Westminster School. Then he went to St. John's College, Cambridge.

Becoming a Church Leader

After finishing his studies, Charles Dodgson became a church leader. In 1746, he was given a job in a church in Bintry, Norfolk. Later, he moved to the north of England. He ran a school in Stanwix and became a church rector in Kirby Wiske in 1755.

He also worked as a tutor for Lord Algernon Percy. Lord Algernon was the son of a very important person, the Duke of Northumberland. In 1762, the Duke gave Charles Dodgson another church job in Elsdon, Northumberland.

That same year, 1762, Charles Dodgson was chosen to be a member of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for scientists and thinkers.

Rising Through the Church

Charles Dodgson quickly moved up in the church. On August 11, 1765, he became the Bishop of Ossory. This special ceremony took place at St. Werburgh's Church, Dublin. William Carmichael, who was the Archbishop of Dublin, led the ceremony.

Ten years later, in 1775, he was given an even higher position. He became the Bishop of Elphin on April 12, 1775. King George III even congratulated him on this promotion. The King joked that he should be happy to leave his old palace because its horse stables were not very good!

Family Life

In 1768, Charles Dodgson married Mary Frances Smyth. They had three sons and one daughter.

One of their sons was Captain Charles Dodgson. He was born around 1769. This Captain Charles Dodgson later had a son who was also named Charles Dodgson. This younger Charles Dodgson became an Archdeacon, a senior church official.

The Archdeacon Charles Dodgson was the grandfather of a very famous writer. This writer is known as Lewis Carroll. Lewis Carroll wrote the classic books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.

Another child of Bishop Charles Dodgson was Elizabeth Anne Dodgson. She married Major Charles Lutwidge. Their daughter, Frances, was the mother of Lewis Carroll. So, Lewis Carroll was connected to Bishop Charles Dodgson through both his father's and mother's families!

Later Life and Death

Charles Dodgson passed away in Dublin, Ireland, on January 21, 1795. He was buried at St. Bride's Church, Dublin.
