Sir Charles Edmonstone, 2nd Baronet (born 10 October 1764 – died 1 April 1821) was a Scottish politician. He was also known as the 12th of Duntreath, which refers to his family's historical estate.

Early Life and Education

Charles Edmonstone was the third son of Sir Archibald Edmonstone, 1st Baronet. His family was well-known in Scotland.

He received a good education, which was common for people of his background. He attended Eton College, a famous school in England. After that, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford, one of the colleges at the University of Oxford.

After his studies, Charles Edmonstone became a lawyer. He worked as one of the "six clerks in Chancery." This was a job in the legal system, helping with important court documents and legal processes. He held this position until his father passed away.

Political Career

Sir Charles Edmonstone followed in his father's footsteps and became involved in politics. In 1806, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Dumbartonshire. An MP is a person elected to represent a specific area in the country's parliament, where laws are made.

However, he lost his seat in the next election, which happened the following year. But he didn't give up on politics. In 1812, he was elected again, this time as the MP for Stirlingshire. He held this position until he passed away.

Like his father, Sir Charles was a member of the Tory political party. The Tories were one of the main political groups in Britain at that time. He supported the government led by Lord Liverpool, especially during the later years of the Napoleonic Wars. These wars were a series of major conflicts in Europe involving France and many other countries.

Family and Later Life

Sir Charles Edmonstone was married twice. His first wife was Emma, who was the daughter of Richard Wilbraham Bootle. They had one son and one daughter together.

He married his second wife, Louisa Hotham, on 5 December 1804. Louisa was the daughter of Beaumont Hotham, 2nd Baron Hotham. With Louisa, Sir Charles had four sons and two daughters. One of their daughters, Louisa Henrietta, later married John Kingston in 1829.

Sir Charles Edmonstone passed away in Brighton in 1821, when he was 58 years old. He died from an illness. After his death, his eldest son inherited his title and became the next Baronet.
