Charles Baker Fowlkes (born February 16, 1916 – died February 9, 1980) was an amazing American musician. He played the baritone saxophone and was a very important member of the famous Count Basie Orchestra for more than 25 years.

Early Life and Musical Start

Charles Fowlkes was born in New York City on February 16, 1916. When he was young, he learned to play many different instruments. He studied the alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, clarinet, and even the violin. Eventually, he decided to focus on the baritone saxophone, which became his main instrument. Sometimes, he also played the flute.

His Career and Time with Count Basie

Fowlkes spent the early part of his music career working in New York. He played with several well-known bands before joining Count Basie. From 1938 to 1944, he played with Tiny Bradshaw. After that, he joined Lionel Hampton's band from 1944 to 1948. He also played with Arnett Cobb from 1948 to 1951.

In 1953, Charles Fowlkes joined the legendary Count Basie Orchestra. He stayed with this famous band for the rest of his life, which was over 25 years! He was a loyal and important part of their sound. The only times he took breaks from the orchestra were to help manage the career of his wife, Wini Brown, who was a singer. Charles Fowlkes passed away in Dallas on February 9, 1980.
