The Charles Grilk House is an important old building in Davenport, Iowa. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it's a special place worth protecting because of its history and design.

History of the Grilk House

This house was designed by a well-known architecture company. The company was called Temple, Burrows & McLane. This house shows that even famous architects designed homes for everyday people. They didn't just design for the super-rich. It's a good example of their simpler work.

The house was built in 1906 for Charles Grilk. It was even shown in a magazine called Architectural Review in 1907. They called it a "Plaster House" because of its outside walls. Many different families have lived in it over the years.

What the House Looks Like

The Charles Grilk House is a mix of two building styles. It has parts of the Dutch Colonial Revival style. It also looks like a Bungalow with an American Craftsman feel. This means it uses natural materials and has a smart, efficient layout.

The house has one and a half stories. It is made of wood and has a rectangular shape. Look for its narrow, shaped cornice (the molding at the top of the walls). It has a special roof called a side-gambrel roof. This roof has two slopes on each side. There are also two dormers on the front. These are windows that stick out from the roof.

The main door has narrow windows on each side, called sidelights. A wide, flared eave (the part of the roof that hangs over) covers the entrance. Next to the main door, you'll see a bay window with many sides.
