A Look Back: The House's Story

This house was built by Elwood Rogers, a very busy local builder around the early 1900s. He built many homes in the area. The first person to own this house was Charles Guthard.

Who Was Charles Guthard?

Charles Guthard was born in Saline Township. He started his career working on farms. He saved up his money and, in 1903, he opened his own hardware store. He first partnered with Adam Hornung. Later, he teamed up with Henry Schroen. Together, they ran a big store that sold hardware, farm tools, buggies, paints, and other useful items. Charles Guthard later moved away from Saline to the West.

What Does the House Look Like?

The Charles Guthard House is a wooden house with a mix of two popular architectural styles: Colonial Revival and Queen Anne.

Special Features of the House

  • Tower: It has a cool square tower on one corner.
  • Porch: There's a single-story front porch that stretches across the entire front of the house.
  • Windows: The front of the house has many different kinds of windows. You can see round, arched, rectangular, and even special Palladian windows.
  • Details: The gable ends (the triangular parts of the roof) and the corner tower have decorative shingles. The tower itself has a hipped roof, which means it slopes down on all sides.
