Charles Alexander Jones (born January 12, 1962) is a former American basketball player. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for four seasons. Charles was mostly a forward. He played for the Phoenix Suns, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Washington Bullets. Today, he is a college basketball coach.

Early Life and College Basketball

Charles Jones was born and grew up in Scooba, Mississippi. He went to East Kemper High School there. Charles was a great jumper. He still holds a special record for rebounds in the Mississippi High School All-Star Game. In 1980, he grabbed 29 rebounds in that game.

After high school, Charles went to the University of Louisville. He played basketball there from 1980 to 1984. During his time at Louisville, his team reached the Final Four twice. This is a big tournament in college basketball. In 1982, he was named the most valuable player of the Mid-East Regional in the NCAA Tournament. In his last year of college, he averaged over eleven points and almost ten rebounds per game.

Playing in the NBA

Phoenix Suns

In 1984, Charles Jones was chosen by the Phoenix Suns in the NBA draft. He was picked in the second round. As a new player, he played in 78 games. He started 14 of those games. He averaged almost eight-and-a-half points and over five rebounds per game. In his second season, he played in fewer games, only 43. His numbers went down, and after that season, the Suns released him.

Portland Trail Blazers

Charles did not play in the NBA for most of the 1986–87 season. But then, the Portland Trail Blazers signed him for the last two games. He did not play in those games or in the playoffs. He stayed with the Blazers for the 1987–88 season. However, he played very little, averaging only five minutes per game. At the end of that season, Portland released him.

Washington Bullets

In October 1988, Charles Jones signed with the Washington Bullets. There was another player named Charles Jones on the team. To avoid confusion, he was called Charles A. Jones. He was let go before the season started but signed again in December. As a Bullet, he played in 43 games. He was usually the 12th player on the team. After one season in Washington, he went to Europe. He played basketball in Italy for two seasons before he stopped playing professionally.

Life After Basketball

After retiring from basketball, Charles Jones moved to the Louisville area. He became a police officer with the Louisville Metro Police Department.

In 2019, Charles retired from the police department. He then started working as a security officer at Spalding University. This is a small Catholic school in Louisville. In 2020, he took on another job there. He became an assistant coach for Spalding's women's basketball team.

A TV station, WDRB, shared a story about how he became a coach. The new head coach, Kylee Gorby, really wanted him to join. She gave him team gear and paperwork. She told him the shirts were his no matter what. Charles said it took her asking him "probably after the 10th or 12th time" before he agreed. He also said that the game has changed a lot. It took some time to get used to coaching, but he enjoys it.
