Early Life and College Basketball
Charles Jones grew up in Scooba, Mississippi. He went to East Kemper High School there. He was a fantastic jumper and still holds a special record. In the 1980 Mississippi High School All-Star Game, he grabbed 29 rebounds!
After high school, Jones played college basketball at the University of Louisville from 1980 to 1984. His team made it to the Final Four twice during his time there. In 1982, he was named the most valuable player of the Mid-East Regional in the NCAA Tournament. In his final year, he averaged more than 11 points and almost 10 rebounds per game.
Playing in the NBA
Joining the Phoenix Suns
In the 1984 NBA draft, the Phoenix Suns picked Charles Jones in the second round. As a rookie, he played in 78 games and started 14 of them. He averaged almost 8.5 points and over 5 rebounds per game.
In his second season, he played in 43 games and started 18. His numbers were a bit lower that year. After this season, the Suns released him from the team.
Time with the Trail Blazers and Bullets
Jones did not play in the NBA for most of the 1986–87 season. However, the Portland Trail Blazers signed him for the last two games of their season. He did not play in those games or in the playoffs.
He stayed with the Trail Blazers for the 1987–88 season but played very little, averaging only five minutes per game. At the end of that season, Portland released him.
In October 1988, Jones signed with the Washington Bullets. To avoid confusion with another player named Charles Jones, he was known as Charles A. Jones. He was released before the season started but was re-signed in December. He played in 43 games for the Bullets, usually as the 12th player on the team.
Playing in Europe
After his time with the Washington Bullets, Charles Jones moved to Europe. He played professional basketball in Italy for two seasons. After that, he retired from playing the sport.
Life After Basketball
After retiring from basketball, Charles Jones moved to the Louisville area. He became a police officer with the Louisville Metro Police Department.
In 2019, Jones retired from the police department. He then took a job as a security officer at Spalding University, a small Catholic school in Louisville. In 2020, he also became an assistant coach for Spalding's women's basketball team. The head coach, Kylee Gorby, really wanted him to join the team. She even brought him team gear and paperwork to convince him! Jones said it took her asking "probably after the 10th or 12th time" for him to agree. He enjoys coaching, even though the game has changed a lot since he played.
