Charles Leonard Levin (born April 28, 1926 – died November 19, 2020) was an important American judge. He worked as a judge for the Michigan Court of Appeals from 1966 to 1972. Later, he became a justice on the highest court in Michigan, the Michigan Supreme Court, serving from 1973 to 1996.

Charles Levin's Early Life and Education

Charles Levin was born in Detroit, Michigan. He went to the University of Michigan. There, he earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, in 1946. The very next year, in 1947, he earned his law degree, a Bachelor of Laws, from the University of Michigan Law School.

Becoming a Judge in Michigan

When Charles Levin decided to run for the Michigan Supreme Court, he did something unusual. He didn't want to join either the Democratic or Republican parties. Instead, he started his own political group and ran as an independent candidate. He was elected and served two more terms as an independent.

Many people respected Justice Levin for his work on the court. Another judge, Avern Cohn, said that Justice Levin showed great knowledge, practical thinking, and courage.

The Levin Family in Politics

Charles Levin came from a family with many people involved in law and politics. His father, Theodore Levin, was also a judge, working for a federal court.

His brother, Joseph Levin, ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 1974. Charles's cousin, Carl Levin, was a U.S. senator for Michigan for many years, from 1979 to 2015. Another cousin, Sander Levin, was a U.S. congressman for Michigan from 1983 to 2019. Since 2019, his cousin Andy Levin has served as a U.S. congressman for Michigan.

Later Life and Passing

In 1999, Charles Levin married Helene White. She was a former law clerk and later became a judge herself. She has been a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit since 2008. The couple later divorced in 2006.

Charles Levin passed away on November 19, 2020, in Detroit. He was 94 years old.
