Charles Dalrymple Lindsay (born December 15, 1760 – died August 8, 1846) was an important church leader in Ireland. He served as a bishop for many years. He was first the Bishop of Killaloe and Kilfenora from 1803 to 1804. After that, he became the Bishop of Kildare, a role he held for a long time.
About His Life
Charles Dalrymple Lindsay was the son of James Lindsay, 5th Earl of Balcarres. He went to school at Wisbech Grammar School. Later, he studied at the University of Glasgow and Balliol College, Oxford. He earned several degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Master of Arts (M.A.), and Doctor of Divinity (D.D.).
He held several important jobs in the church:
- He was a Vicar at St Peter and St Paul in Wisbech from 1787 to 1795.
- He was also a Vicar in Sutterton from 1793 to 1803.
- He served as a Rector in Tydd St Giles from 1795 to 1803.
- From 1803 to 1804, he was the Bishop of Killaloe and Kilfenora.
- He then became the Bishop of Kildare, serving from 1804 until his death in 1846.
- At the same time, he was also the Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin from 1804 to 1846.
His Family
Charles Dalrymple Lindsay was married twice.
His first wife was Elizabeth Fydell. They got married on January 1, 1790. They had three children together:
- Charles Lindsay (1790–1855), who also became a church leader.
- Elizabeth Frances Lindsay (1791–1812).
- Philip Yorke Lindsay (1795–1832).
His second wife was Catherine Eliza Coussmaker. They married on June 2, 1798. They had one child:
- George Hayward Lindsay (1799–1886).
