Charles Magauran was an important leader of the McGovern family in Ireland. He was also known as the Baron or Lord of Tullyhaw in County Cavan. He was a chief during a very challenging time in Irish history, from about 1641 to 1657.

Who Was Charles Magauran?

Charles Magauran came from a long line of chiefs. His father, Brian Magauran, was the chief before him. Charles was the oldest son. He also had two younger brothers, Domhnall (also called Daniel) and Feidhlimidh (also called Phelim). His family had been leaders in the Tullyhaw area for many generations.

Becoming a Leader

After his father, Brian Magauran, passed away sometime after 1628, Charles became the new chief of the McGovern clan. He lived in Ballymagauran Castle, which was the main home of the chiefs.

Joining the Irish Rebellion of 1641

Charles Magauran played a big part in the Irish Rebellion of 1641. This was a major uprising against British rule in Ireland. Charles led the McGovern forces during these wars.

Fighting at the Battle of Benburb

At the Battle of Benburb on June 5, 1646, the McGovern forces fought alongside Owen Roe O'Neill. Charles Magauran likely led them in this important battle. A later family member, Major Edward Magauran, wrote about this event. He mentioned that his great-grandfather was involved in this rebellion. He also said that the family's castle was later destroyed by order of Oliver Cromwell. Because of their part in the rebellion, the family lost their lands.

Losing Land: Cromwellian Confiscations

Around 1657, a list was made of landowners in County Cavan. These were people whose property was taken away by the government. This happened during the time of Oliver Cromwell. Charles Magauran was one of about 20 landowners in Tullyhaw who lost their property.
