The Charles Manning Reed Mansion, also known as the Erie Club, is a beautiful old house located in Erie, Pennsylvania. This historic building has a rich past and stands out with its unique architectural style. Today, it serves as a private club.

Discovering the Charles Manning Reed Mansion

This impressive brick mansion was built a long time ago, between 1846 and 1849. It started as a grand home and has been expanded several times over the years. For example, a new section was added around 1855, and another in 1865. A more recent addition was built in 1970.

A Look at Its Design and Style

The mansion is two and a half stories tall and made of brick. The front of the house is very striking. It has a large, triangular roof section called a pediment. This pediment is supported by four tall, two-story columns. These columns are fluted, meaning they have vertical grooves carved into them. They are also in the Ionic order style, which is a classic Greek design.

What is Greek Revival Architecture?

The style of the mansion is called Greek Revival. This popular style in the United States during the 1800s was inspired by ancient Greek temples. Buildings in this style often feature grand columns, pediments, and a sense of balance and order. The Charles Manning Reed Mansion is a great example of this style.

Connected to the main house is a long, one-story recreation hall. This hall is about 20 feet wide and 120 feet long. Another part was added to this hall around 1920.

Who Built This Grand House?

The original section of the mansion was built by J & W Hoskinson. The architect, or person who designed the building, was E.B. Smith. The mansion was built for Charles Manning Reed. He was a very important person in Erie's history. His family was among the first permanent settlers in the area.

From Home to Club: The Erie Club

The building was originally a private home. However, in 1904, the Erie Club purchased the property. Since then, it has been used as a clubhouse for the organization. This means it's a place where members can gather for social events and activities.

A Place of History: National Register

Because of its historical importance and beautiful architecture, the Charles Manning Reed Mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This is a special list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history. The mansion is also part of the West Sixth Street Historic District, which is an area with many other historic buildings.
