Charles Monck, 1st Viscount Monck facts for kids
Charles Stanley Monck was an important figure in Irish history. He was born in 1754 and passed away on June 9, 1802. He was the first son of Thomas Monck, who was a Member of Parliament (MP). His mother was Judith Mason.
Charles Stanley Monck served as a Member of Parliament for Gorey from 1790 to 1798. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the government. In 1801, he was given the special title of 1st Viscount Monck. This was a reward because he voted for the Act of Union in 1800. This Act joined the Kingdom of Ireland with the Kingdom of Great Britain. Before becoming a Viscount, he was made Baron Monck of Ballytrammon in County Wexford in 1797. These titles, like Viscount and Baron, are part of the Peerage of Ireland, which is a system of noble ranks in Ireland.
His Home: Charleville House
Charles Stanley Monck's main home was a large estate called Charleville House. This beautiful house looks out over a water meadow near the River Dargle and the Killough River. The estate is about 3 kilometers from the village of Enniskerry. It is also about 4 kilometers from Powerscourt Waterfall.
The Monck family first owned this estate in 1705. This was when Charles Monck, who was the grandfather of the 1st Viscount, married Angela Hitchcock. She was an heiress, meaning she inherited a lot of wealth. The original house on the estate was destroyed by a fire in 1792. The Viscount then hired an architect named Whitmore Davis to design the house we see today. Building the new house took a very long time and was not finished until 1830. This long delay was because of the 1798 rebellion, a major uprising in Ireland.
In 1797, the Viscount also built four identical small houses, called lodges, on his estate. He also built a row of houses in Upper Merrion Street in Dublin. Number 22 is known as "Monck House," and number 24 is called Mornington House.
Family Life
In 1784, Charles Stanley Monck married his cousin, Anne Quin. Her father was Henry Quin, a doctor from Dublin. Anne's mother was Anne Monck, who was the first daughter of Charles Monck of Grangegorman. After her husband, the Viscount, passed away, Anne later married Sir John Craven Carden. Anne died on December 20, 1823.
The Viscount and Anne had several children:
