Who Was Charles O'Kelly?

Charles O'Kelly was born in Ireland, either in Screen or Clonlyon, which are places near Aughrim, County Galway. His father was John O'Kelly and his mother was Isma Hill. She was the daughter of Sir William of Ballybeg, from County Carlow.

Young Charles went to school at St. Omer. This was a famous college in Europe. He first became a soldier and fought in Ireland in 1642. This was during a time of conflict in the country.

A Soldier and Politician

In 1674, Charles O'Kelly inherited land in Aughrim. This made him an important person in his area. Later, in 1689, he was chosen to be a member of parliament (MP). An MP is someone who helps make laws for the country. He represented Roscommon County in the Irish Parliament.

O'Kelly also continued his military career. He fought again as a colonel in the Williamite War in Ireland. This was a major war that shaped Ireland's future. He took part in important battles, including those at Aughrim and Limerick.

His Important Book

After his time as a soldier, Charles O'Kelly became a writer. He wrote a book called Macariae Excidium, or the Destruction of Cyprus, containing the Last Warr and Conquest of that Kingdom. This book is very important because it tells the story of the Williamite War.

His book is special because it is the only account of the Battle of Aughrim written by someone who lived in that area. This gives us a unique look at history from a local person's point of view.
