Who Was Charles Oscar Harris?

Charles Oscar Harris was born on August 5, 1852, in Tuskegee, Alabama. He went to college at Oberlin College in Ohio and then to Howard University in Washington D.C. These schools helped him prepare for a life of public service.

A Voice in Alabama Politics

After finishing his studies, Harris returned to Alabama. He became a member of the Alabama House of Representatives in 1876 and 1877. This meant he helped make laws for the state. He was a member of the Republican Party. He also attended the Republican National Conventions eight times. At these conventions, he helped choose who would run for president.

Fighting for Equal Rights

In March 1875, Charles Oscar Harris and other important African American leaders in Montgomery decided to test a new law. This law was called the Civil Rights Act of 1875. It was supposed to make sure everyone, no matter their race, could use public places like theaters.

Harris and his friends bought tickets for seats that were usually only for white people at a local theater. When they were not allowed to sit there, they took the issue to court. This was a brave step to challenge unfair rules and fight for equal treatment for all citizens.

A Career in Public Service

After his time in the state legislature, Harris continued to serve the public. He worked for many years as a mailing clerk in the post office. He held this job under seven different presidents and four postmasters. This shows he was a dedicated and reliable public servant for a long time.
