The Charles R. Palmer House is a special old house in Burlington, Vermont. It is located at 201-203 North Willard Street. This house was built around 1911. It is a great example of an American Foursquare style home.
What makes it unique is that it's a duplex. This means it's one building divided into two separate homes. The house is in a historic part of the city called the Old North End. Because of its history and style, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
What Does It Look Like?
The Charles R. Palmer House is a two-story building made of wood. It has a hip roof, which means all sides slope downwards to the walls. You can also see dormers, which are windows that stick out from the roof.
The outside of the house has different cool designs. Some parts are covered with wooden shingles, which are like flat, overlapping tiles. Other parts have wooden clapboards, which are long, thin boards.
There's a porch that goes all the way across the front of the house. It has fancy turned posts and decorative brackets. The porch roof is flat, with a small pointed part (a shallow gable) right above the stairs.
Inside, the house is split into two homes that are mirror images of each other. Each home has L-shaped staircases. These stairs still have their original balustrades, which are the fancy railings and posts that keep you safe.
A House from a Kit!
The Charles R. Palmer House was built around 1911. But here's a cool fact: it was a "kit home"! This means it was manufactured by a company and sent to Burlington in pieces.
The company was called the North American Construction Company. Later, it became famous as The Aladdin Company. They were pioneers in selling homes through mail-order catalogs. You could order a house, and they would send you all the parts to build it!
This specific house is an example of their popular "Devon" duplex model. At that time, Burlington was growing very fast. Many similar kit homes were built on Willard Street and other nearby streets.
