Charles R. Wilson, born on October 14, 1954, is an American lawyer. He serves as a senior judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. A "senior judge" is an experienced judge who continues to work part-time after reaching a certain age and years of service.

Early Life and Education
Charles R. Wilson was born in Pensacola, Florida, in 1954. He attended Jesuit High School in Tampa. After high school, he went to the University of Notre Dame. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (BA), in 1976. Later, he received his law degree, called a Juris Doctor (JD), from Notre Dame Law School in 1979.
Mr. Wilson's Career Path
After finishing law school, Mr. Wilson began his career in the legal field.
Working as a Law Clerk
From 1979 to 1980, he worked as a law clerk for Judge Joseph W. Hatchett. A law clerk helps a judge with research and writing legal documents. Judge Hatchett was a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
Serving Hillsborough County
From 1980 to 1981, Mr. Wilson worked as an assistant county attorney in Hillsborough County. This role involves providing legal advice to the county government. After this, he worked as a private lawyer in Tampa for five years.
In 1986, he became a county state judge in Hillsborough County. He served in this position until 1990. From 1994 to 1999, he was the United States Attorney for the Middle District of Florida. A U.S. Attorney is the chief prosecutor for the federal government in a specific area.
Becoming a Federal Judge
Mr. Wilson has held several important roles as a federal judge.
Magistrate Judge Role
In 1990, he was appointed as a United States magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. He served in this role until 1994. Magistrate judges handle many duties to help district judges.
Joining the Court of Appeals
President Bill Clinton chose Mr. Wilson to be a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. This happened on May 27, 1999. He was nominated to fill the spot left by Judge Joseph W. Hatchett, who retired.
Mr. Wilson's nomination was widely supported. Both senators from Florida, Bob Graham and Connie Mack III, agreed with his appointment. The Senate approved him by a voice vote on July 30, 1999. He officially received his judicial commission on August 9, 1999. He started his work as a circuit judge on September 13, 1999. On December 31, 2024, Judge Wilson took on "senior status."
