Charles Régis de Coriolis d'Espinouse (1726–1793) was an important officer in the French Navy. He is best known for his service during the American Revolutionary War, also called the War of American Independence.

Coriolis d'Espinouse was born into a well-known family from Aix-en-Provence, France. He started his naval career quite young.
He joined the French Navy as a Garde-Marine on July 1, 1741. This was a rank for young officers learning about naval service. He worked hard and was promoted to Lieutenant on February 11, 1756.
Commanding Early Ships
- In 1764, he took command of a ship called the xebec Requin. He used this ship to transport troops to Corsica.
- From 1769 to 1770, he captained a new 18-gun warship named the corvette Flèche. This ship was based in Toulon, a major French naval port.
Rising Through the Ranks
Coriolis d'Espinouse continued to advance in his naval career. He earned more important commands and higher ranks.
Becoming a Captain
He was promoted to captain on November 15, 1771. A few years later, in 1776, he commanded the 34-gun frigate Aurore. He sailed this ship on patrols near Algiers, Majorca, and Tunis.
Leading Warships in Battle
- In 1778, he commanded the 64-gun ship Caton. This ship was part of a larger group of warships led by Louis de Fabry de Fabrègues.
- In 1779, Coriolis d'Espinouse was given command of an even larger ship, the 74-gun Destin. This ship was part of a major French fleet.
Key Battles and Promotions
His most notable service came during the American Revolutionary War.
- In 1781, he commanded the 74-gun ship César. He led this ship during the important Battle of the Chesapeake on September 5, 1781. This battle was crucial for the American victory.
- He was promoted to Chef d'Escadre on January 12, 1782. This was a very high rank, similar to a rear admiral.
- He also participated in the Battle of Saint Kitts on January 24 and 25, 1782. After this battle, he helped with the Siege of Brimstone Hill and the French invasion of Saint Kitts.
- Later in 1782, Coriolis d'Espinouse took command of the 80-gun ship Duc de Bourgogne. He captained this ship at the Battle of the Saintes on April 12, 1782.
