Charles Stanley, 8th Earl of Derby (born January 19, 1628 – died December 21, 1672) was an important English nobleman and politician. He was the oldest son of James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby and Charlotte de La Trémouille. Charles Stanley lived during a time of big changes in England.

Charles Stanley's Life and Role
Early Life and Family
Charles Stanley was born into a powerful family. His father was the 7th Earl of Derby. His mother was Charlotte de La Trémouille. As a young man, Charles was known as Lord Strange. He did not take a major part in the English Civil War.
A Time of Change
In 1651, Charles was in France. His father faced a serious situation. Charles tried to save his father's life. Sadly, his efforts were not successful. After his father's death, Charles became the 8th Earl of Derby.
Returning to Public Life
Charles lived quietly for a while. He stayed at Bidston Hall in Cheshire. In 1659, he supported a rebellion led by George Booth. This uprising was not successful. Charles faced legal trouble for his support.
However, things changed in 1660. He was officially restored to his titles. The family's lands in the Isle of Man were also returned to him. This was a significant moment for the Stanley family.
Serving Liverpool
Charles Stanley also served his community. He was the mayor of Liverpool. He held this important position between 1666 and 1667.

His Marriage
In 1650, Charles Stanley married Dorothea Helena Kirkhoven. Dorothea's father was Jehan, Lord of Heenvliet. He was a diplomat from Holland. He helped arrange important royal marriages. Dorothea's mother was Katherine Wotton.

His Children
Charles and Dorothea had two sons:
- William Stanley, 9th Earl of Derby (around 1655–1702): He was the older son. William became the 9th Earl of Derby. He had two daughters but no sons.
- James Stanley, 10th Earl of Derby (1664–1736): He was the younger son. James later became the 10th Earl of Derby. He took over the title after his older brother passed away. James had one child who died young.
In 1660, Dorothea became an English citizen. This was made official by an Act of Parliament.
