Charles Philip Stourton, 17th Baron Stourton (born 1752, died 1816) was an important figure in English history. He inherited his title and lands from his father, William Stourton. His mother was Winifred Howard, who came from a very old and respected family, the Howards, and was a prominent Roman Catholic.

Who Was Charles Philip Stourton?

Charles Philip Stourton became the 17th Baron Stourton in 1781, after his father passed away. A "Baron" is a noble title, usually passed down through families, and it meant he was a member of the British peerage. He held this title until his own death in 1816. After him, his son, William Joseph, became the 18th Baron.

Family Life

On July 12, 1775, Charles Philip Stourton married Mary Langdale. Mary was the daughter of Marmaduke, the 5th Baron Langdale. Together, Charles and Mary had eight children.

Important Family Members

Among their eight children, two sons became particularly well-known:

  • William Stourton became the 18th Baron Stourton, continuing the family line.
  • Sir Edward Marmaduke Joseph Vavasour was another notable son.

Their third son, Charles Langdale, also made history. He was one of the very first Roman Catholics to become a member of the House of Commons. The House of Commons is a very important part of the British Parliament, where laws are made. Charles Langdale was a leading voice for Roman Catholics in the 19th century.

Land and Estates

Charles Philip Stourton inherited a large estate called Roundhay Park in Leeds from his father. However, his father's father, Captain Charles Stourton, had originally acquired this land. Charles Philip later sold Roundhay Park in 1803. After selling it, he bought another estate in Yorkshire called Allerton Mauleverer.
