Founding Charlestown

Strickland played a big part in creating the town of Charlestown. This new town was built next to an older settlement called Bellaghy. Bellaghy was in County Sligo. Farmers from County Mayo faced problems when trying to sell their goods at the Bellaghy market. The rules there made it hard for them.

Many Mayo farmers, including those who rented land from Lord Dillon, complained about these difficulties. They told Strickland about their struggles. Strickland then came up with a plan to help them. He decided to create a new town. This new town would be a place where Mayo farmers could easily sell their crops and animals. It was built very close to the established market in Bellaghy. This way, farmers could still reach the main market but also have their own fair trading spot.

How Charlestown Got Its Name

When the new town was first started, it was called Newtown Dillon. However, it was later renamed to Charlestown. This change was made to honor Charles Strickland himself. It was a way to recognize his efforts and vision in creating the settlement.

Helping Build Ballaghaderreen Cathedral

Charles Strickland also contributed to important buildings in the area. In 1860, he helped with the construction of the Cathedral in Ballaghaderreen. This was a major project for the community. His support was so important that it was remembered in the Cathedral itself.

A Special Commemoration

To honor Charles Strickland and his wife, Maria, a special window was placed in a chapel at the Cathedral. This window was installed by the Bishop of Achonry and others. It serves as a lasting tribute to their help in building the Cathedral.
